Salt is not a metal and it does not corrode anything by itself, but it decides where everything else is allowed to grow. On this one it bleached the whole plate to a grey green stipple and then stopped.
Underneath, the engraving is untouched. That is the trick of the object: it looks finished and it is still perfectly usable, which is true of a lot of things that came out of the sea.
The stipple came from a cistern wall in Sultanahmet, scanned in July when the wall was drying out.
