Plate is the only material I work in that has two lives in it at once: the layer somebody paid for, and the cheaper thing underneath that shows up the moment the layer wears.

I put the dent in first and built the tarnish around it, which is the wrong order but the only one that gives you a bruise rather than a fold.

The yellow at the rim is where the plating has gone entirely. It is the most expensive-looking part of the object and the part that means it is ruined.
