Iron is the material I trust least and use most. It never settles: every layer of scale lifts the one beneath it and takes a little metal away, so the object is quietly getting smaller the whole time you are looking at it.

The knot is invented. The scale is not: it is built from a scan of a salvage yard in Tuzla, where a whole afternoon of rain had brought the color up.

When I photograph iron I light it lower than everything else, because the plates only read as plates when the light comes across them.
